Officially leaving this lj (and practically the whole site in general) for...well, plurk, really, which I did a while ago. But I also now have a dw account! And now, so does CFUD. GOODBYE, LIVEJOURNAL. I'll still check on my flist here, but yeah. I'm robowolf on dreamwidth, surprise surprise.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute. So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it. If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it. What to do? - Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it. - If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link. - You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this. - Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness. As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article: "LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow." So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue. We know someone in upstate New York who needs a good custody lawyer ASAP. I'm not at liberty to go into details publicly, but this woman is very afraid that her abusive boyfriend is going to get sole custody of her young child. She's presently being represented by a court-assigned lawyer who doesn't seem to care about the case, and she has very few resources left at this point. Her next hearing is on Thursday. If you know a good lawyer in New York State who might be willing to take this case for a low fee or pro bono, or at least offer her advice or support, please let me know. If you don't know anyone, please repost this far and wide. As a mother and an abuse survivor, it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to contemplate a child being left in the hands of an abuser. Eva slept on me (literally, her --> me --> bed) today for ten minutes. Ish. I totally dozed off at some point and eventually finagled my way out. SHE WAS SO TIRED, IT WAS ADORABLE AND AMAZING ;o; I wish I had a picture to show everyone.
Also she used names a lot and said mine. Yay! She's getting better at it, for some reason she usually says it "Biona" but today she was very clear with the F. She also sang about FIONA IS WEARING GLASSES because my glasses sometimes fascinate her. You guys are just lucky I have no EXCITING BATHROOM STORIES, seriously, Eva using the potty on her own = so amazing you have no idea. Finally! A post all about My Favouritest Little Girl Ever.
A few months ago, I started volunteering to work with Eva, a six-year-old girl with autism and PDD. Her family works with the Son-Rise Program (which I have some issues with, but some of the core ideas seem to work) and it's just been amazing. She has two parents (mom and dad), a younger brother (just turned three), two grandparents, one old terrier and a never-ending supply of loving volunteers. The progress Eva has made is astounding. I remember when I started, she wasn't very vocal - it took a lot of effort and motivation for her to talk outside of singing (she loooves songs). Now she talks all the time, and while some of it is fairly echolalic, a lot of it is requests for things. She's getting close to being potty-trained, which is no easy task when the majority of that happened before she started vocalizing WHEN she had to go to the bathroom. Years ago she couldn't even handle two people being in a room; now she can be the star of a two-hour long party with about twenty people, plus her excited little brother and their dog. It's amazing. I wish I had photos to show you all how cute she is, and I swear, her eyes have changed. Before - you can see it in photos - her eyes always look...fuzzy, like they're not really seeing you. Now they're so much sharper and brighter, and she notices things a lot. It's wonderful. Also, she loves to snugglepuggle. Especially when she's tired, which is always around my shift time, so we usually spend at least half the time snuggling while I sing to her. It's pretty much the best part of my week. I just can't keep this in any longer: please, please stop using the words "retard" or "retarded" or any other permutation of those words. It's wrong, it's not okay, and it's just hurtful and offensive. I used to think I could keep that inside me or just ask people not to use it around me, but I just can't keep it in any more. Please, guys, just stop saying that word.
